Sour Patch Candy Website - http://www.soursweetgone.com

Overview

The http://www.soursweetgone.com project was both easy and challenging. The project was multi-faceted with the main website being a Flash based website with a full sitemap, a secondary XHTML based website with a full sitemap to meet Accessibility requirements and a Mobile XHTML/WAP version of the website with a limited sitemap.

All versions of the site are managed via the ModX Content Management System with a WURFL database for detecting Mobile handset capabilities and an Accessibility Device check to help determine if a user should be sent to the XHTML version of the site.

The Flash version was developed in Actionscript 2 using an XML parsing class to read in the dynamic content from the CMS which also manages which sections of the Flash site are live and handles storing any data collected as well as various email functionality.

The Flash version also uses a deep-linking feature which allows for bookmarking, direct linking to features of the site and using the browser back/forward buttons to navigate.

Features include:

  • Candy Info: Product Information including nutritional facts and packaging graphics
  • Sweet-Cetera: Downloads - Wallpapers, Ringtones, Icons; Custom Wallpaper creation tool; Contest Signup
  • Sound-Off: a survey application
  • Celebs: Information about the celebrities involved in the Sour Patch online short film
  • Punk-a-Friend: an email to a friend application which lets the user upload a photo, distort the photo using two preset displacement map filters - one sweet and one sour, then email it to a friend
  • Patch Mail: an eCard building application with branded backgrounds
  • Chain Photo: visitors can add their photo to an ever-growing chain of photos (an admin tool on the backend allows the website maintainer to accept or reject photos)
  • Patch TV: provides an interface for viewing the Sour Patch online short film as well as Sour Patch Candy TV Spots

Problem-Directive

Develop a website to bring the Sour Patch Candy online brand up-to-date. Deploy multiple features which would make the site fun and create a word of mouth buzz about the website to encourage referral visitors.

Additional Considerations

To meet Cadbury PLC corporate guidelines this website had to meet W3C and WAI AA standards. The website also had to take into consideration COPA guidelines which include performing age checks to ensure that any aspect of the site which would request information was disabled for minors.

All data collection was integrated with a 3rd party service: Traction™ using a CURL emulator (CURL was not supported on the server) and the Traction API.

Both the Flash version and the XHTML version of the site were tagged with Omniture Site Catalyst Analytics Tracking codes.
